The former Coronation Basilica was the site of 38 coronations, 15 kings and 9 queens were buried here. The Holy Crown, the national treasury and the archive were guarded here as well. St Stephen had made the Coronation Church erect in the 11th century, however, during the centuries it was rebuilt, enlarged many times.

Thus the first building had had three naves, four towers and two sanctuaries. Later, during the era of Matthias king it became a 100- meter- long-late gothic building in which 8000 people could be admitted. Unfortunately, in the Turkish time the gunpowder,which was stored in the tower, exploded and the greatest church of the country fell into ruin.
