The Townhall is a double building complex. The right side one is the older, it was already the townhall in the 1700s. The left side building is 100 years younger, it contains the Zichy palace. A bridge connects the two buildings together.
Its main building had been registered as a town hall in 1689. The most beautiful and ornated part of the Townhall is the main entrance, made by Thomas Walch stone carver from KismartonThe allegorical statues of Justitia (Justice) and Prudentia (Virtue) are guarding the ornate front gate of the building. Now the certified replica of the Holy Crown, the Orb and the coronation sword are kept here. The magnificent baroque building court is famous as well: in 1938 the parliament was held here and they decided to declare 20th August National and Bank Holiday. Upstairs, in the corridor Vilmos Aba-Novák’s fresco captures the events of the memorial year of 1938.
