The secret of hieroglyphs - 1 August 20.00

The superb performance of the Archeology Theatre of the King St. Stephen Museum is on programme again.

On July 15, 1799, in the Egyptian port city of Rosetta (now Rashid), French military engineer Pierre-François Bouchard, leading a group of sappers, discovered a dark granite block. It contained the exact same text written in Egyptian hieroglyphs, Egyptian Demotic script, and Ionic (Greek). The find, which became famous as the Rosetta Stone, became the Holy Grail of deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. Jean-François Champollion, the linguistic genius, determined to solve this thousands-of-years-old riddle. He had no idea of the monumental task he was taking on.
