The well-known symbol of the pharmacy at Országzászló Square is depicted on an ornate, fluttering metal flag featuring the symbol of Asclepius—a snake coiled around a chalice—which, like many other downtown shop signs, is the work of Mária Ecsedi
In Greco-Roman mythology, Asclepius is the god of healing and medicinal remedies, raised from a mortal to join the gods by Zeus. A characteristic attribute of this popular deity was the medical staff with a serpent coiled around it. This symbol remains the emblem of many pharmacies today, much like the one seen here.
