Orb

The most well-known symbol of Székesfehérvár is Béla Ohmann’s piece of art, however its inscriptions’ significance is not known for everyone. The dates under the lions represent important things: 1001- St Stephen’s coronation, 1688- the liberation of the town from the Turkish reign, 1938- 900th anniversary of St. Stephen’s death.

The meaning of the Latin inscription around the Orb: St Stephen donated the fundamental freedoms of Fehérvár. Under the Orb, once upon a time, an ice store for food had existed, that was used as a prison during the Turkish time.

The Latin inscription means: Székesfehérvár was given its free royal town status by St. Stephen, founder of the state. The Soviet army boarded it up in 1945. In the 1950s it was cut in half and the upper half was removed with the cross. It regained its spherical shape in the 1960s and in 1986 the cross was also taken back.
