Miklós Melocco’s artwork was made for the 500th anniversary of King Matthias’s death in 1990. The central figure is Matthias King with his beloved lions in a gothic environment. At the top of the monument, the heraldic bird of the Hunyadi House, a raven holding a ring can be discovered. Around him, the allegorical representation of the seven Liberal Arts in statues and coat of arms forms are situated.
The orator statue impersonating the rhetoric is a drinking fountain as well. Besides Visegrád, Fehérvár also was Matthias King’s beloved town, not only his wedding ceremony with Beatrix queen was held here but his funeral as well. Beatrice of Aragon had had an adventurous travelling for 3 months from Naples to Fehérvár. The king lavished his fiancée on splendid gifts, treasures. Their wedding ceremony was held in The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary accompanied by great fireworks. This was the bigger fireworks in Hungary.
Matthias died on 6th, April in 1490 in Vienna. It is a great riddle whether his death was caused by poisoning or stroke.
