The statue holds the memory of Constable György Varkocs who was killed in action. During the Turkish siege (1543) the town judge- worried about the outnumber- wanted to hand over the fortress to the Turkish Sultan, although the constable and his soldiers endured to the end….
György Varkocs- who was in charge of defending the town- and his soldiers were just fighting in the outskirts and started retreating to the inner fortress because of the outnumber. The citizens of the town unexpectedly pulled up the bridges of the Buda gate and prevented the soldiers from the escape. Varkocs and his men realized that there was no other way only to attack the Turkish and die bravely.
The leaders and the soldiers who stayed inside the town surrended the town and handed over the town keys to the sultan. However they did not get any reward: the sultan made all of them behead. The corpse of the brave constable were buried in the Coronation Basilica.
