The roundel of the castle wall that closed the southern edge of the medieval town, was standing here. Between the present day Szent István Square and Vörösmarty Square there were gardens. The garden which belongs to the neighbouring Carmelite church reached the middle of the present square. The roundel which was standing here – was demolished first.
After the demolition of the wall the square was reconstructed (1806) and the elegant parade was born. For the construction of the classicist County Hall, that standing at the southwest of the square, the bricks of the south bastion were used, its façade was designed by Mihály Pollack. Our pride is the
23 m highplane tree was planted in 1890, its perimeter is almost 6 metres.
Under the shadow of the tree, the griff-headed public well was placed here in 1914 to water the park.
In the middle of the triangular square Saint Stephen’s bronze equestrian statue is here, (Sidló Ferenc, 1938) reminds us that Székesfehérvár received first the town law from St Stephen, and it was a great promotion and honour.
