Palotai Gate

The almost 1 metre wide townwall was surrounded by a moat. In the middle age the connection was done by draw-bridges, the passage was through the town gates which were defended by the guards. At the beginning, there had been two town gates.

The Palota gate led towards Várpalota-Veszprém. In the era of Matthias King a strong, circular bastion, so called barbican was built in front of it.

The gates were built at the turn of the 13th 14th centuries, after the Mongol invasion, according to Béla IV’s town building and fortifying idea.

The town gate was fortified with retractable portcullis (bar) and drawbridges. Moat and bulwark systems were built to protect the bridgeheads leading to the gates. One of these ramparts – consisting of poles, beam, soil, bones-or soil fortification remainshad been explored during the construction of the neighbouring bus terminal, but its remains cannot be seen nowadays.
