Fő Street

The present day street system, the romantic winding house rows were born not for their own sake, they still preserve the medieval street structure. The castle walls were built- adapting the terrains- on the headland that reaching the marshlands and the medieval downtown street lines were formed following the castle walls.

The street started from the Palotai gate led to the Budai gate winding along the town.

The closure of the castle was over at the beginning of the 19th century when the new streets were being built and the outskirts were connected to the historical downtown. The Palotai gate and the demolishing of the castle wall in 1809, significantly changed the downtown’s structure. In the main street (former Nádor street) the houses of the most prestigious families could be found.

As a matter of curiosity: the today Fő street has had so many names during the centuries: the previous names of the street can be read on a plaque in the wall of the Cistercian Church in the Fő street.
