The present day Várkapu name is not an accident: the demolished tower (1872) of the former Budai gate stood here. From the two town gates it was the bigger one, where the traffic from the north happened. Our kings arrived through this gate to participate the most glittering ceremonies, including their own coronation ceremonies.
Francis Emperor took the inspection of the troops in 1809 in Székesfehérvár on the occasion of the victory over last noble uprising when 15000 noble rebels arrived from the Transdanubian area. The narrow Buda gate could not have been able to let so huge armed forces so except one gate tower the whole complex was demolished on the base of Archduke Joseph of Austria (Palatine of Hungary). The Latin plaque was guarded on the wall of the demolished tower wall, now it can be seen in the wall of the Carmelite Church.
The new street that was born after the demolition of the gate, was called Nádor street.
